Young Canadian Tubist

from

the Maritimes

Gabrielle Carruthers first picked up the tuba in high school at age thirteen. In 2014, she was accepted as an alternate for the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra (NBYO) and remained a regular orchestra member until her last season in 2021. After receiving a Bachelor of Music degree at Université de Moncton with Gregory Irvine (2021), Gabrielle pursued her studies at the Master's level. She is currently studying a Master of Music in Performance with Sasha Johnson at McGill University.

As a performer, she has played with professional orchestras such as Tutta Musica and Symphony New Brunswick and in many local chamber ensembles. Being a francophone from New Brunswick allowed her to collaborate with Acadian artists such as Calixte Duguay, Rémi Belliveau, and Lisa Leblanc. Despite being a classically trained tubist, Gabrielle is always open to trying new things and challenging herself to other genres.

The young tubist participated in several summer programs, such as the Domaine Forget Academy (2020 & 2021) and Canada's National Youth Orchestra (2020 & 2021). In addition, Gabrielle was featured on CBC Radio 2's list of 30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians Under 30 in the summer of 2020.

When she is not playing the tuba, you can find Gabrielle on her yoga mat, caring for her plants, or cuddled up on the couch with her cat, Milo!
